Why It’s Important to Work With a Licensed Contractor

When you’re hiring someone to build a block wall, retaining wall, or paver patio, one of the most important decisions you can make is choosing a licensed contractor. Licensing isn’t just paperwork, it’s proof that your contractor has the training, accountability, and legal authority to complete your project safely and correctly.

Working with a licensed professional protects your investment, your property, and your peace of mind. Here’s what each of our licenses means for you:

Our Licenses

General Contractor License – North Carolina

Holding a North Carolina General Contractor License means we are legally authorized to take on construction projects valued at $30,000 or more. This license shows that we’ve met the state’s strict requirements for knowledge, financial stability, and ethical practice. For large retaining walls or full-scale outdoor renovations, this credential ensures your project complies with state building codes.

General Contractor License – South Carolina

Similar to North Carolina, the South Carolina General Contractor License allows us to handle projects above a certain threshold (typically $5,000+). It means our team passed state testing, financial reviews, and background checks. For homeowners in Fort Mill, Indian Land, and Rock Hill, this guarantees that your project is completed according to South Carolina standards.

Residential Builders Commission – South Carolina

The South Carolina Residential Builders Commission License specifically covers residential construction work such as block walls, retaining walls, patios, and structural landscaping around homes. This license proves we have both the skill and approval to safely complete residential projects that directly affect your property value and safety.

LLR – South Carolina Residential Builders Commission

The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) oversees the Residential Builders Commission. Our registration here means we are continuously accountable to the state. We follow all inspection, safety, and code requirements, so your project won’t run into compliance issues that could cost you time or money later.

What Happens If You Hire an Unlicensed Contractor?

While some homeowners are tempted to save money by hiring unlicensed “contractors,” this choice can quickly backfire. Here are the risks:

  • No Legal Protection – If the work is done incorrectly or the contractor disappears mid-project, you have no recourse through state licensing boards.
  • Code Violations – Unlicensed work often ignores building codes and drainage requirements, leading to costly repairs, fines, or forced tear-downs.
  • Safety Hazards – Retaining walls and block structures are load-bearing. If improperly built, they can collapse, causing injury or property damage.
  • No Insurance Coverage – Home insurance may not cover damages from unpermitted or unlicensed work.
  • Hidden Costs – A cheaper upfront price can turn into expensive fixes when the wall cracks, leans, or fails drainage tests.

Why Licensing Matters for Block Walls & Retaining Walls

Unlike cosmetic projects, block walls and retaining walls are structural features. They manage soil pressure, prevent erosion, and protect your property. If they’re not built to code, the consequences are serious: collapsing walls, flooded yards, or damaged foundations.

By choosing a licensed contractor, you’re hiring a team with:

  • Verified knowledge of engineering standards and drainage systems.
  • Proven ability to manage permitting and inspections.
  • Financial stability that ensures accountability and completion.
  • Insurance coverage to protect both you and our workers on-site.

Are Retaining Walls Worth It?

Absolutely. A well-constructed retaining wall in Charlotte NC adds structural integrity to sloped land, prevents erosion, and enhances curb appeal. It's not just a landscape feature—it's an investment in your property’s value and safety.

Do I Need a Permit for a Retaining Wall in North Carolina?

In many cases, yes. Local building codes often require permits for walls over a certain height or those impacting drainage. We’re well-versed in local guidelines and will assist you in securing any needed documentation.

Which Retaining Wall is Most Cost-Effective?

If budget is your priority, poured concrete retaining walls typically offer the lowest cost per square foot. However, block retaining walls provide a balance of affordability and visual appeal for smaller or medium-sized projects.

Our Warranty

At Block Wall Ballantyne, we stand behind the quality of our craftsmanship. Our goal is to give you peace of mind knowing your project is completed to industry standards, using reliable materials, and backed by a clear warranty.

General Warranty Terms

We guarantee that all workmanship and installation will meet accepted industry standards and will be free from defects for one year from the date of completion. All work is carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal building codes.

This warranty assumes site conditions remain the same as they were at the time of installation. Any new obstacles (such as fences, walls, thickened concrete, or irrigation lines) that must be addressed during warranty service are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Warranty coverage begins once the project has been paid for in full. Repairs or service under warranty will be scheduled promptly, subject to material availability, weather conditions, and our existing work schedule. Landscaping, sod, or lawn repairs are the responsibility of the homeowner once the project is completed.

Materials

All materials used in your project are inspected before installation. After completion, we are not responsible for damage to materials caused by outside factors. Many of the products we use carry their own manufacturer warranties. If a manufacturer’s defect arises, we will help you work with the manufacturer to repair or replace the item.

Hardscape & Masonry

  • Block Walls & Retaining Walls – Workmanship and base installation are covered for up to one year. Polymeric sand and mortar joints are covered for 30 days.
  • Patios & Pavers – Masonry base work is covered for one year; polymeric sand is covered for 30 days.
  • Retaining Walls Requiring Engineering – If engineering is required, warranty terms may be project-specific and will be defined in the contract.

Plantings & Landscaping

  • Plantings – Covered for 90 days if an automatic irrigation system is in place, or 30 days without irrigation. No warranty applies to transplanted materials, perennials, or damage caused by pests, pets, vandalism, or extreme weather.
  • General Landscaping (sod, grading, mulching, curbing, etc.) – Once the project is complete and accepted by the homeowner, no warranty applies.

Features & Carpentry

  • Fire Features – Wood-burning fire features are not covered due to the natural impact of heat. Gas appliances are covered under manufacturer warranties only.
  • Outdoor Kitchens & Appliances – Covered under manufacturer warranties.
  • Carpentry/Porches/Decks – Labor and workmanship are covered for 1 year, but wood itself is not warranted against natural deterioration.

Irrigation & Drainage

  • Irrigation Systems – Covered for 30 days for workmanship. Regular maintenance and service calls are not included.
  • Drainage Solutions – Covered for 30 days for workmanship-related issues. Extreme weather or acts of nature are not covered.

Dryscape & Turf

  • Dryscape (boulders, gravel, stepping stones, etc.) – No warranty applies once the installation is complete.
  • Artificial Turf & Putting Greens – Covered for 30 days for installation workmanship. Manufacturer warranties apply to product defects.

Lighting

Most LED fixtures and transformers carry lifetime manufacturer warranties. LED lamps generally carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty. Our installation labor for lighting is covered for 30 days.

Administration & Project Terms

  • Scheduling & Delays – Projects are scheduled based on contract dates. We are not responsible for delays due to weather, permits, HOA approvals, or events beyond our control.
  • Payments – Final payment is due upon completion. Warranty coverage begins only after the final invoice is paid.
  • Changes to Scope of Work – Any changes must be agreed upon in writing (text, email, or signed change order) prior to installation.
  • Cancellation – If a project is canceled by the homeowner, deposits may be refunded minus labor, administrative costs, and any restocking fees for materials.

Insurance & Liability

We carry Commercial General Liability Insurance of not less than $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Certificates of insurance are available upon request.

We will indemnify and hold harmless our clients for claims, damages, or losses caused by our work, except where issues are the result of customer negligence, misuse, or failure to maintain the project.

Warranty Limitations

Aside from the specific warranties listed above, no other warranties — expressed or implied, including merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose — are provided. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.

This document represents the complete warranty agreement and replaces any prior discussions, agreements, or representations.
